On my first visit in September last year, I was welcomed and guided by Mark Hopewell, one of the volunteers of East Kent Railway. Mark kindly shared his in-depth knowledge of the site’s multi-layered history and of the current activities of the EKR community with me, and together we walked the preserved section of the line – from Shepherdswell, through the Golgotha Tunnel and via Eythorne to the end of the remaining track, which overlooks the remnants of the former Tilmanstone Colliery – and back again.
