Listening to the oral histories in the Imperial War Museum research rooms revealed a number of revelations. Primarily the rationing of sugar for jam-making through the Women’s Institute slowing the process with red tape, regular inspections and bureaucracy. Alongside this, it is also clear jam (in particular Tickler’s Plum and Apple Jam) was a significant part of front-line life, evident in theatre posters by cartoonist Captain Bruce Bairnsfather.
