Working in and around Deal for last five years on a project titled Greetings from DEAL, the place has and continues to fascinate. Having spent many memorable childhood summers in the town, every street reverberates in my adolescence; witnessing the town as a whole significantly transforming in this time – actively and latently. From a sleepy seaside town with an outstanding music shop to its current life as a vibrant urban situation that is only 90mins from the centre of London, heritage punctuates along its winding streets, hidden pathways, striking landmarks and districts of gestural development to create a rare tangible and humane urban grain. For the Greetings from DEAL project, I have been fortunate to collaborate with a wonderful variety of creative people who have lived or continue to live in Deal. Each with their own memories that have informed a collection of narrative postcards that embody a shared moment in time either through photography, film, artifact or intervention. These occasions have been incredibly powerful experiments that have captured a sense of this cinque port and how it has adapted as it navigates a unique trail of urban renewal. I hope the project will never end – and in this way Codename: Joined up becomes a new chapter in this vital conversation.
